WHAT IS MOISSANITE?
Possessing fire, brilliance, and lustre that surpasses even that of a diamond, moissanite twinkles and sparkles unlike any gemstone on earth. Composed of carbon and silicon, the moissanite crystal is one of the hardest and toughest known naturally occurring minerals, making it extremely resistant to scratching, chipping and breaking. Just like diamond, it can be casted into intricate jewelry designs because of its resistance to high temperatures. Overall, moissanite is not only an earth-friendly substitute for diamond, it is arguably a better gemstone than diamond for creating spectacular fine jewelry that will last a lifetime.
Moissanite was first discovered in minute quantities from particles carried to earth by a meteorite thousands of years ago. There is so little naturally-occurring moissanite that there isn’t enough to make a pair of earrings; therefore all moissanite used in jewelry has to be meticulously lab-created. It is now available as beautifully faceted gemstones in a wide array of different shapes and sizes. Unlike other brilliant stones that cloud and dull with time, moissanite is guaranteed to never lose its optical properties. It is neither porous like cubic zirconium, nor attracts oil and dirt like diamond. You can enjoy the brilliance and fire of moissanite for a lifetime with absolutely no maintenance other than the occasional cleaning.
Moissanite Properties
Brilliance: Brilliance relates to the refractive index of the jewel and is measured by the amount of light that enters the jewel and reflected back to the viewer.
Fire: Fire is the dispersion of light in a jewel. It also refers to how light breaks into the spectrum of colours and is measured by the amount of coloured flashes viewed as the jewel is placed under different lighting conditions.
Color: Moissanite created by Charles and Colvard are not color graded. However, when compared to the GIA diamond color scale, their Forever Classic stones are typically J color, while their Forever Brilliant™ stones are G-I color. In 2015, Charles and Colvard released the Forever One™, a stone that rivals even the whitest diamonds with a D-F color.
Clarity: Clarity is a measure of the surface blemishes and internal inclusions of a gemstone. The clarity of moissanite is on average equivalent to a VS clarity on the GIA scale. What this means is the stone appears to be flawless to the naked eye, but the small inclusions can only be seen under 10x magnification. Less than 10% of faceted diamonds have this level of clarity.
Cut: Moissanite is cut much like a diamond, but because moissanite has a higher refractive index, the stone is typically cut slightly shallower than a diamond to maximize its optical properties. Therefore, the ideal cut of moissanite stone is going to be different than the ideal cut of a diamond.
Diamond Equivalent Weight: Moissainte’s specific gravity is slightly lower than diamonds. Since most jewellery is sold by carat weight, Charles & Colvard provides a mm size and diamond equivalent weight. For example, an 8mm moissanite has the same diameter as a 2.00 carat diamond but will weigh slightly less.
HARRO GEM
Harro Gem by My Moissanite Inc. is a premium moissanite made from silicon carbide (4H crystalline polytype version), the same material as the Forever One by Charles & Colvard. However, not all moissanite is created equal. Just like diamonds have the 4 C’s, moissanite can also vary in color, clarity, cut, and carat; Harro Gem has one more “C” up its sleeve: Choice. Colourless moissanite typically comes in common shapes, such as round, square, cushion, and oval. Just for the round cut alone, Harro Gem has a variety of different cuts, such as the Hearts & Arrows, Belgium cut, 100 Facet Starburst, Old European Cut, Vintage Jubilee Cut, and Rose Cut. The cushion can be made in a pillow cut (rectangular), radiant cushion cut, Hearts & Arrows, or Old Mine Cut. You can even order a cushion and oval with either a brilliant cut or a crushed ice cut.
If there is a shape that we don’t have in stock, we can custom cut a moissanite stone just for you. Are you looking for a pair of colorless trapezoid side stones to go with your 5-carat emerald Harro Gem centre stone? Do you need an 8.25mm Old European Cut to fit into an antique ring, but every other moissanite provider is either cutting an 8mm or an 8.5mm? Whatever the case may be, we will have the perfect solution to meet all your unique gemstone needs. That’s the beauty of choice!
Harro Gem is also an over-achiever in color, cut, and clarity as well. We have searched the world looking for the whitest and clearest moissanite rough manufacturer, and we found them. Then we hired a team of highly skilled stone cutters who know how to turn moissanite rough into beautiful works of art.
The clarity of our moissanite is second to none. The fewer inclusions a stone has, the better the light can dance around inside the stone and back to your eyes. All of our moissanite has a clarity rating between VVS1 and VVS2, just shy of a flawless rating. That means that even under 10 times magnification, you will be hard-pressed to find any flaws inside the stone.
